Winter 2022: Exploring Central Arizona

Camp Verde, AZ

This is a continuation of our Winter 2022 trip, where our next stop after Las Vegas brought us to two stops north of Phoenix.  We had to make some changes in our itinerary, and luckily I found a fairly new RV park about 95 miles north of the Phoenix, Verde Ranch RV Resort.   This resort is definitely following a trend of offering options for all types of vacationers, including RV sites, Cabins and even a few covered wagons set up for glamping.  There's a great pool and hot tub, pickleball courts, a basketball court, and a fairly large dog park.  Using our criteria for long term stays, Verde Ranch scored 72.4 our of 100, and we would definitely consider it however it is pretty spendy, at over $1200/month.  Across I-10 from Verde Rance is Camp Verde, with access to shopping and a few restaurants, including Verde Brewing Company.

Sedona
While in the area we drove to Sedona twice to take in the amazing scenery.  Our first trip was to Doe Mountain Trail, and this time we both made it to the top (last time I was in Sedona I wimped out about half way up), where we were rewarded with 360 degree views of the Sedona landscape.  It's so hard to capture what you can see, but here's a few select pics from Doe Mountain.

Our second stop was to take on the Boyton Canyon to Subway Cave trail.  Tim saw pictures of this cave on Instagram and when he researched its location, found out it was nearby where we were staying.  This is a must do hike as you'll see in the video.

After this invigorating hike, we stopped in at
Oak Creek Brewing Company to rest and enjoy a brew.

Prescott, AZ

About an hour southwest of Camp Verde lies Prescott, Arizona, pronounced "press-kit".  I think we only to be corrected once.  I found a great place just outside of Prescott, tucked away in the rocks surrounding Watson lake, Point of Rocks Campground.  Tim enjoyed exploring and climbing on the rock structures in the campground and got some amazing drone shots.  We experienced some weather our first night where it got fairly cold and it snowed about six inches.  Not much going on with the weather, but we made due!  Oh boy what a treat the next day walking around the lake - stunning!  Here is a short video of Watson Lake.

The plan was to take advantage of the bike trails around the lake, but the snow kind of messed that up.  By the time it warmed up it was muddy.  We made due with a few trips to downtown Prescott, took a day trip to Congress, where we met some our neighbors who winter there for a dessert ride in their side-by-side. We stopped for lunch in Yarnell at the Ranch House, the cutest little diner

We took another day trip to Jerome, a famous ghost town about an hour north of Prescott.  The drive up 89A is amazing, with the most spectacular overlook I've ever seen.  The image below is not mine.  I didn't even get my camera out as I knew there is no way to capture the view.  To the north are the red cliffs of Sedona.

While in the Prescott area we enjoyed Prescott Brewing, Insurgent Brewing Company, and LazyG Brewhouse.  We really enjoyed the area, and hope to explore more around the Cottonwood and Sedona areas in 2023!  After this, we start heading east and north.  See our Winter 2022 Wrap Up.
