Winter 24: A Month in Tucson

Mexican poppies in Saguaro National Park

This is the final post for our Winter 24 travels.  We already have a post about Hot Springs National Park and our month in Texas.   After years of trying out different parks all over the south, we had finally found a place we knew we would enjoy for a longer term, and we booked for a month at Voyagers in Tucson.  This was going to be our first time anywhere for more than two weeks.  And we loved it.

We were able to golf a lot more, taking in the course on the property where all you need is your 7, 8, 9, pitching wedge and putter as well as Dorado with our friends that live in the area.

I took a Fused Glass class and enjoyed learning different techniques, with my final project taking over two weeks to complete.  More projects are definitely planned for next year!

We both enjoyed the numerous biking trails in the area, and Tim joined a desert biking group that met once a week; although he went on his own in the desert many times.  And of course we took advantage of the amazing hiking in the area, enjoying Saguaro National Park and King Canyon on the west side of Tucson.  The images below are from King Canyon.

We had dinner with friends from Minnesota visiting the area, who recommended we take in the San Xavier del Bac Mission, a National Historic Landmark founded as a Catholic mission by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692. Construction of the current church began in 1783 and was completed in 1797. Beautiful!

Over the month we took in several breweries, including
MotoSonora, Voltron, Iron John, and Crooked Tooth.   Yes, we are running out of new breweries in the Tucson area.

We finally took a road trip to Bisbee and Tombstone!  Bisbee is best known for its copper-mining past. Homes that once belonged to miners run up Tombstone Canyon from Old Bisbee, the historic town center.  It's hard to tell from the photos but the roads through town are pretty steep!  While there we visited Old Bisbee Brewing Company, a quaint little pub.

We then made our way to Tombstone and stopped in for lunch at Big Nose Kate's with the staff dressed in authentic western garb. We had planned on spending the night in Tombstone, but it poured for at least an hour so walking around the town was difficult.  Luckily we were able to take cover at the Tombstone Brewing Company
And finally, we visited the glorious Tucson Botanical Gardens, where our local golf friends wed over 20 years ago.  Really beautiful!  Can't imagine the cacti flowers during the blooming season.
We are looking forward to starting our 2025 Winter travels by heading to Tucson first, followed by visiting with friends and family in Texas.  What plans do you have for next winter?
