Winter 24: A Month in Texas

von Trapp Brewery and Bierhall

von Trapp Brewery and Bierhall: Stowe, VT

von Trapp Octoberfest and Helles
During our east coast foilage road trip we meandered up the hill from Stowe to von Trapp Brewing.  Yes, it is those von Trapps from The Sound of Music.  We quickly found you needed reservations to eat, and in fact the host was quite uppity that we didn't, yet we still expected to have the priviledge to drink their beer.  So not a great start to our visit, but we stood in line to get our overpriced drafts and took a seat at one of the picnic tables outside.  Atmosphere gets a 2.

The selection at von Trapp Brewery is very limited with just a few standards, although their website indicates more seasonal offerings.  Tim had the Oktoberfest rating it a 3.75/5 and I had the Helles.  Selection gets a 1.

As for Branding, there is fairly consistent use of the family crest in their imagery, with the standard brews just varying in the color of the can.  Some of the can images on their website show unique and interesting designs.  They have a fairly active Instragram page, including a calendar of the brews scheduled for the year, the first time I've seen that.  I had read that the family was taking advantage of the von Trapp family name, but after reading some of their history I would tend to disagree - here's a sampling.
The von Trapp family, who had always been reticent to commercialize their family heritage, realized that they had a product deserving of the family name.

While von Trapp did have some merchandise, it was unlike any brewery merch we had seen before.  Instead, it was very touristy, with things like Christmas ornatments, puzzles, etc.  In fact they didn't even have stickers - instead we took a coaster.  Branding gets a 2.

We paid $17 for two 16 oz pours, and our friend paid $16.50 for ONE pretzel.  Ok it was fairly large, but completely overpriced.  Price gets a 1.  Overall we were fairly disappointed, but the scenery kind of made up for it.  Oh and I love The Sound of Music.
