Winter 24: A Month in Texas

Pondaseta Brewing Co.

Pondaseta Brewing Co.; Amarillo, TX
Blue Cadillac, a Sour and Enter the Dragon, a Pilsner

While walking through Amarillo's Route 66 Historic District, we asked a local shop owner for local brewery recommendations, and he said he really liked Pondaseta. Only a few miles from us, and on the route to our campsite, we found Pondaseta Brewing Co.

Pondaseta has an unremarkable exterior, nice interior with separate seating in the operation room. We were greeted upon entering, with two very friendly staff asking if they could help us with selection and samples. That friendly staff motif continued as there were frequent check-ins during our visit. Atmosphere gets a 3.

Pondaseta has a wide variety of taps, with some guest taps as well. I had a Pilsner titled Enter the Dragon, mostly for the name, but I did enjoy it. Tim had the Blue Cadillac, a Sour brewed with "copious amounts of blueberry and raspberry puree." Tim rated his Sour 4.25 in Untapped. Selection gets a 4.

Pondaseta's beers have creative individual imagery however from what I saw these are only used on the crowlers and shirts. There's a lost opportunity to include on the digital board, on their limited merchandise selection, and on their website. Stickers were $1 and they had quite a few options. Their Instagram site is fairly active, with many posts announcing events, food pictures, and other miscellaneous imagery. Basically no visual design strategy. Branding gets a 3 but I think it really could be a 4 with some overall strategic design.   See examples of the can designs and very nice colorful sticker below.

My pint was $6, Tim’s 12 oz pour was $8, slightly above average. Price gets a 2.

Overall we enjoyed our visit, but one thing that put it over the top was the food. As you know we don't normally mention food as many breweries don't serve and/or can't in the case of some goofy laws in Minnesota. However, we just have to mention in this case. We ordered the hummus an Philly Cheesesteak Tacos and it was not only an extremely generous portion, it was amazingly delicious.

The hummus with veggies and Philly Steak Tacos were tremendous!
