Winter 24: A Month in Texas

Texas Bluebonnets!

Lupinus texensis

Wrapping up our Winter 2022 travel, the weather in Minnesota still wasn't that great, so we opted to leave our travel trailer in Texas, at Tim's sister's place.  We thought, hey, we'll come get it when the weather gets better, it will be a nice short trip.

In the meantime, we ended shopping for and finding a fifth wheel we loved, and a truck to tow it.  It was strange because all we had of the camper was photos, and we felt like we got a good deal on the trade in.  AND - Camping World said they would pick up the trailer.  Like in Texas.  Well, we still had A LOT of stuff in the trailer, so we opted to go back to Texas, unload the trailer, and drop it off at the Camping World in Fort Worth.  The timing of this was early April. After we dropped off the trailer (ask us sometime about the flat tire) we ventured out to Ellis County to finally see the Texas Bluebonnets!  Ellis County publishes a map of locations where farmers and land owners have agreed to allow visitors and/or public places.  The images below are from all of those locations.

I was somewhat surprised at their size.  They're adorable, but I thought they were going to be about three feet tall at least.  It was a long drive, but so glad we took the time to see the Texas Bluebonnets in bloom!

On our way north the plan was to spend a day at Hot Springs National Park, however severe thunderstorms were forecast, so we stayed on 71 north which I'm sure would be a beautiful drive if it wasn't pouring all day.  We ended up stopping in Fayetteville, AR for a night - our first time in Arkansas, and were able to enjoyed a tap at Fossil Cove Brewing Company.

We made another stop near Des Moines, and then stopped in Galena, Illinois for a night.  The next day we headed to Winona to visit family for Easter, then home the next day.  We covered 2800 miles in just over a week, whew.  We may need to rethink leaving a trailer in Texas from now on!
