Winter 24: A Month in Texas

Bad Habit Brewing

Bad Habit Brewing; St. Joseph, MN

Sunny fall day on the patio

About 15 miles and 22 minutes from our lake home in Cold Spring is one of our favorite breweries, Bad Habit Brewing.  Bad Habit is in St. Joseph (or "St. Joe" as it's known locally), a college town with two of the premiere private schools in the state located within five miles of downtown.  The College Saint Benedict (or St. Ben's) is a private all women's school right in St. Joe, while Saint John's is a private all male school located about five miles west.

While St. Joe is indeed a college town, this is far from a college bar.  The space is done in the typical industrial look and feel, with garage doors to the outside patio.  This is one of the nicest outdoor spaces we've ever seen including a large, glass stone firepit and ample room to play bags.  There is usually a decent size crowd any time of the year but especially in the summer.  Ambiance gets a 4.

The brewery has a large selection that changes quite frequently, with a wide variety of flavors including seltzers.  I mostly stick with the blonde ales and pilsners, so I've had several including Hangup, a blonde ale, and Lemon Fresh, which is a lemon radler.  Super fresh.  Since we go here a lot, Tim tries a lot of different beers.  So far his favorite was the Rather Ripped Blood Orange Milkshake IPA, giving it a 5 out 5 in his Untapped App.  He also loves the Sours; rating 4.5/5 for these three sours: Flip Flops & Drop Tops, Sunday Sour and Bangarang.  Selection gets a 4.

Bad Habit has some of the best individual beer imagery we've seen across the country, and these are leveraged quite a bit including on their tap board.  They have a ton of t-shirts, hoodies, flannels and hats,  however most will have the basic company logo.  They charge $2 for stickers.  Their website is robust, and their Instagram site is active with a visual design strategy to leverage those individual beer images.  Branding gets a 4.

Most pints are $6, with some stouts or IPAs at $7.  Price gets a 3.   Bad Habit is one of the best places we've ever enjoyed a brew, summer or winter.  If you're traveling west on 94 past St. Cloud, take the slight detour and stop in!
