Winter 24: A Month in Texas

Fredericksburg Brewing Company

Fredericksburg Brewing Company; Fredericksburg, TX

After spending a chilly ten days on Texas' most southern tip, we started the journey north, with our first stop in Fredericksburg, Texas, known for its wineries.  Much of the area was still suffering from the historic winter storms, so we had to call to make sure the RV park we had selected was open and had power and water.  Luckily we were able to make good time on the 360 mile trip from Port Isabel to the Oakwood RV Resort in Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg Brewing Company is a brewery/restaurant, and in fact the oldest operating brew pub in Texas.  The entire town has maintained the old German-Texan charm.  For example, in the town square, Marktplatz, the Vereins Kirche is a replica of a 19th-century German church that once stood in the city.

I had a pint of the Not So Dumb Blonde, a tasty, not too bitter blonde ale.  Tim had the El Hefe and enjoyed it a lot, giving it a 4.25/5 in his Untapped app. We did try the scotch egg as well.  It was a good bite, but I prefer the ones at Brit's Pub in Minneapolis!

After finding out that a wine tasting would be $25 for three 6oz pours per person, Tim said, "for that price, I'll just get a beer."  So back to the brewery we went.  I repeated the blonde ale, while Tim tried the Honey Kolsch, rating it 4/5.

There is no individual beer branding, although there is an overall brewery design respecting the area's German heritage.  In fact, there is a large, air-conditioned biergarten.  The second floor of the building provides "Bed & Brew" guest rooms, 12 rooms (one on ground level), each decorated in a different theme.

Selection was very limited - not sure if they rotate frequently or expand during the summer.  From a price perspective, a pint was $6, which is pretty average.  If we're ever in the area again, I would return late April/May, when the Texas bluebonnets are in full bloom.  We'll definitely figure out how to sample some of the wine from one of the over 50 vineyards in the area and finally taste a sample, regardless of the price!
