Winter 24: A Month in Texas

Bandera Brewery

Bandera Brewery; Bandera, TX
Scuba Steve! Cream Ale and Jalapeno Lager

During our winter 2024 travel, on our way to Tuscon, we stopped for the night in Kerrville TX.  But due to very high winds the next day we decided to stay put.  So we needed something to do and decided to head to Bandera (without the 5th wheel), where we have been before.  Upon arriving close to downtown the road was closed and we got diverted.  People and cars everywhere so we parked as soon as we saw a spot.  Well, they were celebrating Mardi Gras with a huge parade on their main street.  What a really fun surprise!  After walking around a bit we decided to head to Bandera Brewery; where the celebration continued.  The first thing we came upon was a shrimp, crab, crawfish boil.  We got a pound of crab and a couple of beers, so good on a warm afternoon.

As their web page mentions, they are on about an acre lot with a large outside area in the back with a band setting up to play and a large barn-style indoor and game area.  They had Mardi Gras decorations and upside down Christmas trees hanging from the ceiling, still there from Christmas season. Ambiance gets a 4.

Bandera had quite a few taps of their own, with a wide variety of options.   I had the Jalapeno Lager, Tim had the Scuba Steve! Cream Ale which he rated 3.75/5 on Untappd.  Selection gets a 4.

Bandera does not have individual imagery for their beers, but the tap names kind of make up for that.  With names like Fat Guy in a Little Coat, I live in a Van Down by the River (both reference to Chris Farley's Matt Foley character , Bill Brasky (an unseen character in an SNL skit) , and even the tap Tim had, Scuba Steve!, is a reference to Adam Sandler's movie Big Daddy.  Their website is somewhat limited, and their Instagram was pretty stale, with the last post in Septemer of 2023 (our visit was February of '24). Bandera had limited merchandise and a free sticker.  Branding gets a 3 only because of the names.

We paid $20 for the pound of shrimp, which is average for the area, and the taps were $6 each, again, average.  Price gets a 3.
