Winter 24: A Month in Texas

Bar Z Winery

Bar Z Winery; Canyon, TX

Pino Meunier

About 15 miles from our campsite in Palo Duro Canyon State Park we found Bar Z Winery.  While we usually stick with breweries we thought we’d give it a try.  All Bar Z wines are made entirely with Texas grapes grown in the Texas High Plains AVA (American Vinicultural Area).

Bar Z is located on the edge of Palo Duro Canyon, on a beautiful piece of land overlooking a valley.  There were only three other guests there when we arrive.   Atmosphere is a 2 as a place to hang, but I imagine it would be amazing as a wedding venue.

Bar Z offered nine options for flights.  After a few samples, the sommelier suggested the Tempranillo, a sweeter red, which I enjoyed.  Tim had the Pino Meunier, again quite enjoyable. Selection gets a 2.

Branding for the wine is minimal - just a few of them have names other than the standard titles.  Their website is decent, but not enough visuals for my taste.  There is a somewhat active Instagram site, however not linked to the website, and with no true visual strategy.  We found minimal merchandise which we have found is typical for winery/vineyards.  Branding gets a 2.

At $10 per glass, its quite high for a beer, however average for a glass of quality wine.   Price gets a 2.  At least the stickers were free!

Overall we enjoyed our visit to Bar Z.  I know wineries and breweries are different, but we used the same methodology for rating.  We met the owner and found out they were a Harvest Host location, an option we're considering for future travel.
