Winter 24: A Month in Texas

The Devil and the Deep Brewery

The Devil and the Deep Brewery; Galveston, TX

The second brewery we visited in Galveston was The Devil and the Deep, located off Post Office Street.  Due to the pandemic, they were only serving outside where there was limited space and even more limited seating.  They brought out a few stools for us to sit on - which was kind of difficult on grass.  They were serving in plastic cups only; kind of a bummer.

I had Evening in Vienna, the Vienna Lager.  It was just ok.  I then tried the Alley Party, a 'pre-pro Pilsner', which I found pretty tasty, but nothing astonishing. Tim had the Pilot Fish, a Pale Ale and a El Soltero, a Belgian Blond. Tim liked the Pilot Fish better, but he always likes trying different ones when he can.

As far as branding - it's fairly minimal.  Black and white design for the logo, and only for the brewery (not brew specific designs).  The name intrigued me however I was unable to find any documentation on the origin of their name.  The website is also all black and white including photos, and fairly minimal as well.

Selection was ok - not a large amount of taps but a wide variety.  From a price perspective, all taps were $5, about average for what we have seen however the cups were probably 10-12 oz vs. a pint.

An interesting location and approach - their website says "The taproom has hosted live music, comedians, science lectures, and art shows".  I think it would be interesting to attend a live event.
